چکیده

The steady-state fluorescence quantum yields of the protonated and deprotonated forms of 8-hydroxypyrene-l,3,6-trisulfonate are determined in three solvents as a function of NaN03 concentration. The measured quantum yields, and therefore also the overall dissociation rate coefficients, decrease with increasing salt concentration. in contrast to Brijnsted‘s classical model for primary salt effects. This is a consequence of the reversibility and the nearly diffusion-controlled recombination rate of the proton in the reaction studied. A quantitative analysis is based on newly derived results for reversible diffusion-influenced reactions. Comparison with experiment is made for two screened potentials. Numerical integration with the Debye-Hllckel potential indicates that it overestimates the salt effect. A second model (the “naive approximation”) is based on a simple screened potential from which analytical expressions for reaction yields and rates are derived. I t shows better agreement with experiment in the range 20-200 mM salt.

Experimental evidence for a kinetic transition in reversible reactions.

We provide a first experimental verification of a theoretical prediction of a kinetic transition in a reversible binding reaction, AB right harpoon over left harpoon A+B, driven by the difference in effective lifetimes of the bound and the unbound states. We consider the kinetics of excited-state proton transfer to solvent from a photoacid whose conjugate anionic base possesses an extremely sho...

The mechanism of excited state proton dissociation in microhydrated hydroxylamine clusters.

The dynamics and mechanism of excited-state proton dissociation and transfer in microhydrated hydroxylamine clusters are studied using NH2OH(H2O)n (n = 1-4) as model systems and the DFT/B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ and TD-DFT/B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ methods as model calculations. This investigation is based on the Förster acidity scheme and emphasizes the photoacid dissociation in the ground (S0) and lowest sin...

Influence of diffusion on the kinetics of excited-state association--dissociation reactions: comparison of theory and simulation.

Several recent theories of the kinetics of diffusion influenced excited-state association--dissociation reactions are tested against accurate Brownian dynamics simulation results for a wide range of parameters. The theories include the relaxation time approximation (RTA), multiparticle kernel decoupling approximations and the so-called kinetic theory. In the irreversible limit, none of these th...

Pressure effects on bimolecular recombination and unimolecular dissociation reactions

The treatment of pressure effects on bimolecular recombinations and unimolecular dissociations is discussed. The analysis of recombination and dissociation reactions is made by showing how the nonequilibrium energy ~E! and angular momentum ~J!-dependent steady-state population distribution functions for the two reactions are related to each other and to the equilibrium population distribution f...
